Community Outreach

The goal of Service and Outreach is to provide an opportunity for parishioners to work together with a common mission of giving back in a variety of ways.  Time and Talent are always welcome – plus it is a great way to meet new people and get involved!

Carroll County Food Sunday Program

The Carpenters Table and Carroll County Food Sunday have been an active Ecumenical outreach program in Taneytown for many years.  Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, many things have changed.  The Carpenters Table welcomed the needy in the area to a sit-down meal on Thursdays and the food pantry would supply a bag of canned food for each family.  Now the seven participating churches in Taneytown take their turn by bagging canned goods, eggs and bread on their assigned Thursday to pass to the cars (and walk ups) from the parking lot of Trinity Lutheran Church.  Each family receives bagged groceries and milk vouchers.  Each adult receives one boxed lunch purchased from the county.  On an average, 175-190 meals are provided each week.

When the need in our Taneytown neighborhood first became apparent, another Ecumenical group was formed.  The Food Friendz gather every Wednesday to make a hardy meal (ranging from soup and bread to 3 course meals) in the kitchen of the Tom’s Creek United Methodist Church in Emmitsburg.  The volunteers are composed mostly from the Carroll Vista community and members of the Tom’s Creek Church.  These meals are also distributed on Thursdays to each family.

Carroll County Food Sunday has not been able to meet all of our requests lately since it has not received its complete order from MD Food Bank.  There is a need for contributions of canned fruit, canned vegetables and macaroni and cheese, but especially peanut butter, jelly and canned soup.

Due to lack of funds, the county purchased boxed lunches are no longer available.  The meals will continue to be provided by the Feeding Friendz as long as possible.

Instead of canned goods, our Parish is requesting monetary contributions.  The Parish will then send a check to Carroll County Food Sunday and they will purchase food in bulk.  Please make your check payable to St. Joseph Catholic Church and place it in the Poor Box or in the Collection Basket.  Note on the check that the donation is for Carroll County Food Sunday.  Also, contributions can be mailed to: St. Joseph Catholic Church, 44 Frederick St., Taneytown, MD 21787.    Contributions, great and small, will go a long way in helping your Taneytown neighbors.
